Elizabeth City, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is trending upward, recording its largest enrollment in more than a decade. The institution welcomed the Class of 2029 with 363 first-time freshman and nearly 250 transfer students. This fall, 2,359 students are enrolled at ECSU—a 4.5% increase over last year’s 2,258 students—making 2025 the ninth consecutive year of growth since 2016.

Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove said the momentum is no accident. “Nine consecutive years of enrollment growth is a testament to ECSU’s strength as an institution and the value of the education we provide,” said Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove. “This achievement highlights our expanding programs, dedicated faculty and staff, and the growing recognition of ECSU as a premier institution in the region.”

Behind the numbers is a story of transformation. ECSU’s focused investment in high-demand academic programs, new partnerships, adult learner initiatives and student-centered support has fueled a steady climb in enrollment. Aviation Science—one of the university’s flagship programs—enrolled 442 students this fall, a nearly 20% increase from the previous year. The program in Unmanned Aircraft Systems also grew by more than 44%, placing ECSU at the forefront of aviation and drone technology education.

Education programs are also on the upswing. School administration saw a 287% increase in enrollment, while residency programs in Special Education, Birth-Kindergarten and Elementary and Secondary Education all doubled or quadrupled their numbers. Health and Wellness Promotion, a fully online program, has expanded from just two students last year to 38 students this fall, reflecting the university’s responsiveness to emerging workforce needs.

The university’s reach is expanding to every student population:

  • Undergraduate enrollment increased by 4.5%
  • Continuing student enrollment increased by 11.9%
  • Graduate enrollment increased by more than 44%
  • Adult learners increased by 14%
  • Certificate programs increased by 180%

ECSU’s progress reflects the institution’s commitment to student success. An increase in hands-on learning opportunities, expanded retention efforts, and strong community partnerships have helped ensure that once students arrive on campus, they are supported in completing their degrees.

“As ECSU grows, so does our impact on the region we serve,” said Chancellor S. Keith Hargrove. “By preparing graduates to meet workforce needs and advancing social mobility for our students, we are helping to strengthen communities across northeastern North Carolina. ECSU is not only educating individuals but also driving economic and social progress for the region and beyond.”

With nine consecutive years of growth, ECSU is starting a new narrative of progress, where access, affordability and excellence come together to expand opportunities.
